Goa All-Night Thingie

As Requested by PMN, here is a detailed account of what happened on the night of October 3rd 2008 in Goa. Considering that it is almost a year since then, I really hope that I am able to remember the minute details..

It was a 4 day trip to Goa, and SN, SPB, ARS and I had travelled the distance from Bangalore by car (that's one trip on which I have not written a travelogue yet!!!). We had left on the Wednesday night, and had reached Goa by Thursday afternoon. ARS is a vegetarian on Thursdays. Poor chap. That night, he suffered while the rest of us were gobbling up prawns, fish, and a lot of other seafoods.. And of course, ARS's favourite chicken too.. So he was frustrated. He could not drink either, as it was a dry day (Gandhi Jayanti).
On the next day, Friday, we decided to go pub hopping. The street that was full of pubs/bars/wine stores, was just about 10 minutes walk from where we stayed in Calangute. Well, 10 minutes walk is to the one end of that street. The other end was 30 minutes away. We went to the other end, and found a not-so-decent bar, and hopped in. After a round of 4 KF Premiums, and a few snacks, we went to another place called Agua. This place was a bit expensive, so we had little bit food and beer. I still remember the calamari semi-dry starter we had.. The masala was so spicy that even SPB started complaining (his usual complaints are about the lack of spices, even in Andhra style restaurants).
After that place, we went to a wine store, which had provision to sit and drink there. Another few rounds of beer. We weren't done. We continued, and found a newly opened pub on a by-street. They said they did not serve snacks, as they hadn't found a cook yet. And they had only draught beer. Good for us, we could order in pitchers. In our half drunken states, we ordered one pitcher. And their pitcher was filled to the brim, not to the neck as they serve in Bangalore pubs. That's at least one mug extra!!

As we continued drinking, two of the guys went out to talk to their respective girlfriends. Once they came back, we continued drowning ourselves in more and more pitchers of beer, until it was about 1 AM. ARS, who was frustrated because of our behaviour the previous night (of offering him non veg food, then suddenly withdrawing the plate, and reminding him that he's vegetarian that day), had a bit more than usual I think. By the end of our session, only SN seemed to retain enough energy to stand straight. Beer over beer, and no food, made the rest of us so inebriated that we had to struggle even to see the road. We had no choice but to walk back, so we continued.

SN and SPB a few meters behind ARS and me. We were walking in the middle of the road. Suddenly ARS started moving to his left. The rest of us could see him going towards the edge of the road, and we knew what would happen next, but our brains were so slow, that all we did was stand and stare. ARS drifted and drifted, and finally what we were expecting for the last 30 seconds happened. ARS fell in the gutter. Lucky guy, the place where he fell was dry, so he had only minor bruises. After that, we somehow managed to crawl back to our apartment and crash on the bed. But we were hungry, so SPB and SN went out again, looking for food. Nope, they didn't find any at 2 AM, so they came back, and we had some snacks and slept...
